Indian Stock Market Today |Indian benchmark indices ended sharply lower on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, as escalating tensions in the Middle East, a surge in crude oil prices and broad-based selling across financial, technology and pharmaceutical stocks weakened investor sentiment.
Buying in select automobile and FMCG stocks, led by Bajaj Auto, Nestlé India and Tata Consumer Products, helped limit some of the losses. The benchmarks, however, recorded their third consecutive session of decline and their steepest fall in nearly two weeks.
At the Closing Bell:
- BSE Sensex: Fell 715.06 points to close at 76,755.05 (-0.92%)
- Nifty 50: Declined 50.80 points to settle at 24,187.70 (-0.21%)
- Bank Nifty: Ended at 57,126.80 (-708.55 points / -1.23%)
Why Did the Indian Stock Market Move Today?
Escalating Middle East Conflict Weighed on Sentiment
Investor risk appetite weakened after the conflict in the Middle East intensified and threatened key global energy transportation routes. Reports of tankers changing course in the Red Sea and disruption risks around the Strait of Hormuz raised concerns over crude oil supplies.
Brent crude climbed above $95 per barrel, increasing worries about inflation, India’s import bill, pressure on the rupee and higher operating costs for companies.
Financial Services Emerged as a Major Drag
The Financial Services index declined 1.29%, with widespread selling across banks and other financial companies.
The weakness also dragged Bank Nifty down 1.23% as SBI, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Jio Financial Services came under selling pressure. Financial stocks were among the largest contributors to the fall in the benchmark indices.
Realty Became the Worst-Performing Sector
The Realty index plunged 2.63%, making it the weakest-performing sector of the session.
The sharp decline indicated broad profit-booking and reduced investor appetite for rate-sensitive and higher-beta real-estate stocks amid rising global uncertainty.
IT Stocks Witnessed Heavy Selling
The IT index declined 1.50%, becoming one of the biggest sectoral losers.
Selling in Infosys and other technology heavyweights weighed on the Nifty as investors remained cautious about weak discretionary technology spending, global growth uncertainty and upcoming corporate earnings.
Pharma Stocks Fell on US Tariff Concerns
The Pharma index declined 1.31% after the US administration outlined a phased tariff proposal for imported generic medicines.
The announcement created uncertainty for Indian pharmaceutical companies with significant exposure to the US market and triggered selling across several major drugmakers.
Consumer Durables Ended Lower
The Consumer Durables index fell 0.86% as broad market weakness and risk-off sentiment triggered selling in discretionary consumer companies.
Metal Stocks Closed in Negative Territory
The Metal index declined 0.48%. Concerns surrounding global economic growth and cautious sentiment toward cyclical stocks outweighed selective buying in individual metal counters.
Energy Stocks Ended Marginally Lower
The Energy index slipped 0.38%. Despite the sharp rise in crude prices, selling in select index-heavy energy and oil-sensitive companies kept the sector under pressure.
FMCG Emerged as the Best-Performing Sector
The FMCG index advanced 0.65%, becoming the strongest-performing major sector of the session.
Positive earnings-driven buying in Nestlé India, along with gains in Tata Consumer Products and other defensive consumer stocks, helped the sector outperform the broader market.
Auto Stocks Managed to End Higher
The Auto index gained 0.18%, supported by sharp buying in Bajaj Auto and other two-wheeler companies after encouraging quarterly earnings.
Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor gained after reporting higher quarterly profits, helping the automobile sector remain positive despite the broad market decline.
Market Overview – Sector & Stock Action Summary
Indian markets extended their decline for the third consecutive session as escalating geopolitical tensions, surging crude oil prices and renewed global tariff concerns triggered broad-based selling.
The Sensex dropped 715 points, while the Nifty slipped below the psychologically important 24,000 level. Bank Nifty declined more than 700 points as financial-services and banking stocks remained under pressure.
Sectoral performance was largely negative. Fourteen of the 16 major sectoral indices ended lower, with realty, IT, pharma and financial services recording the steepest declines. FMCG and auto were the only major sectors to provide meaningful support.

World Markets, Crude & Gold Prices
Global Equities:
Global markets traded on a mixed but resilient note. European equities moved higher, supported by gains in energy companies as crude prices climbed, while technology stocks remained under pressure ahead of major US corporate earnings. Asian markets were mixed as an early recovery in semiconductor stocks lost momentum, while US equity futures traded marginally lower as investors assessed Middle East tensions and awaited results from major technology companies.
Crude Oil:
Brent crude traded at $90.585 per barrel, up 1.90%, as renewed concerns over possible supply disruptions in the Middle East supported prices. Reports of oil tankers changing routes in the Red Sea added to fears surrounding global energy supplies. Elevated crude prices may keep Indian markets cautious, as they can increase inflationary pressure, widen the country’s import bill and weigh on oil-sensitive sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and oil marketing companies.
Gold Prices:
Gold traded at $4,119.57 per ounce, up 1.03%, supported by safe-haven buying amid continued geopolitical uncertainty and expectations surrounding upcoming central-bank decisions. The rise indicated stronger demand for bullion as investors sought protection against Middle East risks and oil-driven inflation concerns, although further movements may remain sensitive to interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments.
