Markets remained under pressure throughout the day as selling emerged in IT, pharma, FMCG and auto stocks, while selective buying in metal, realty and energy counters helped limit the downside.

Weakness in heavyweight stocks such as Infosys, HCL Technologies and Sun Pharma weighed on the benchmarks, while Hindalco, Tata Steel and HDFC Life emerged among the key gainers.

  • BSE Sensex: Fell 281.09 points to close at 77,728.16 (-0.36%)

  • Bank Nifty: Remained largely flat, gaining 6.70 points to close at 57,497.80 (+0.01%)

Why Did the Indian Stock Market Move Today?

IT Stocks Dragged Markets Lower

The biggest pressure came from the IT sector, which remained weak during the session.

Major IT stocks witnessed selling pressure, with:

  • HCL Technologies: Down 2.57%
  • Infosys: Down 2.51%

Concerns around global technology spending, muted demand commentary and uncertainty around US economic growth continued to weigh on IT counters.

Pharma Stocks Remained Under Pressure

Pharma stocks also contributed to the market decline.

  • Sun Pharma: Down 2.49%

The sector witnessed profit booking after recent gains, while investors remained cautious around global pricing pressure and regulatory developments.

Metal Stocks Outperformed on Sectoral Buying

Metal emerged as one of the strongest performing sectors during the session, gaining 1.26%.

Key gainers included:

  • Hindalco: +1.98%
  • Tata Steel: +1.36%

The strength in metal stocks came amid improved buying interest in commodity-linked counters.

Realty Sector Continued Positive Momentum

Realty was among the better-performing sectors, gaining around 1.46%.

The sector continued to attract buying interest as investors remained optimistic about housing demand, infrastructure growth and urban consumption trends.

Financial Services Remained Stable

The financial services sector remained largely unchanged, gaining around 0.01%.

Bank Nifty showed resilience despite weakness in broader markets, supported by stability in select banking and insurance counters.

HDFC Life gained 1.33%, emerging as one of the key financial sector outperformers.

Auto & FMCG Stocks Witnessed Selling Pressure

Auto stocks declined 0.10%, while FMCG fell 1.05%.

Investors remained cautious in consumption-linked sectors amid mixed demand trends and valuation concerns.

India VIX Remained Stable

Market volatility remained contained as investors continued to monitor global developments, crude oil movement and upcoming domestic economic cues.

The absence of sharp volatility indicated that traders remained cautious but not aggressively bearish.

World Markets, Crude & Gold Prices

Global Equities

Global equity markets started the week on a cautious note as investors balanced positive US inflation signals, expectations around Federal Reserve policy and renewed geopolitical concerns.

Asian markets traded mixed, with investors tracking Wall Street’s recent record levels while monitoring movements in crude oil and currency markets. Japan and South Korea remained relatively resilient, supported by strength in technology and export-oriented stocks, while some China-linked markets witnessed profit booking amid concerns around domestic growth momentum.

European markets remained steady as investors assessed corporate earnings updates and awaited further signals on global interest-rate expectations. Defensive sectors showed resilience, while technology stocks continued to experience volatility after recent strong gains.

US equity futures indicated a largely stable opening after Wall Street’s recent advance. Investors continued to focus on the possibility of a more accommodative Federal Reserve stance following softer inflation data, while concerns around geopolitical developments and elevated commodity prices limited aggressive risk-taking.

The latest inflation trends have increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain a patient approach on interest rates. However, markets remain sensitive to upcoming economic data, Fed commentary and movements in US bond yields.

Crude Oil

Brent crude traded at $91.07 per barrel, up $0.218 or 0.24%, according to the latest supplied market snapshot.

Crude oil prices continued to remain elevated near the $91-per-barrel mark as geopolitical uncertainty and supply concerns kept energy markets supported.

Oil prices have gained momentum in recent sessions amid rising risk premiums linked to developments in the Middle East. Concerns around potential disruptions in global shipping routes and uncertainty surrounding major oil-producing regions have kept buyers active.

For India, sustained crude prices remain a key macro concern due to the country's high dependence on oil imports. A prolonged rise in crude can impact:

  • Inflation expectations
  • Current account deficit
  • Rupee movement
  • Input costs for sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals, logistics and automobiles

While global demand concerns continue to limit extreme upside, geopolitical developments remain the primary driver for crude prices in the near term.

Markets will closely track developments around supply disruptions, OPEC+ production decisions and global economic growth signals.

Gold Prices

Gold traded at $4,402.31 per ounce, up $25.84 or 0.59%, according to the latest supplied market snapshot.

Gold prices moved higher as investors continued to seek safe-haven assets amid geopolitical uncertainty and expectations of a softer global interest-rate environment.

The precious metal has received support from:

  • Expectations of a more accommodative Federal Reserve stance
  • Lower probability of aggressive monetary tightening
  • Continued geopolitical risks
  • Demand for defensive assets

A softer inflation outlook has strengthened expectations that central banks may maintain a more supportive policy stance, which generally benefits non-yielding assets like gold.

However, elevated US bond yields and dollar movements remain key factors that could influence bullion prices. Any renewed strength in the dollar or a rise in yields may limit further upside.

Going forward, gold prices will continue to track:

  • Federal Reserve rate expectations
  • US Treasury yields
  • Dollar index movement
  • Global geopolitical developments

With uncertainty remaining elevated across global markets, gold continues to maintain its appeal as a portfolio hedge.
