The markets struggled to capitalize on the early gains and closed lower for the third consecutive session on December 17, influenced by mixed global cues, sustained FII outflows and delays in a potential India-US trade deal.

Broader indices continued to underperform the frontline indices, with the BSE Midcap index falling 0.5% and the BSE Smallcap index declining by 0.8%.

Among sectoral performances, the PSU Bank index rose by 1.3%, while the Media index fell 1.7%. The Private Bank, Realty, Consumer Durables, FMCG and Healthcare indices were down by 0.4-1%.

NIFTY: The index opened 42.30 points higher at 25,902.40, reached a high of 25,929.15 and closed at 25,818.55. Nifty formed a bearish candle with upper and lower shadows on the daily chart. Its immediate resistance level is now placed at 25,900 while immediate support is at 25,760.

BANK NIFTY: The index opened 38.20 points higher at 59,072.80 and closed at 58,926.75. Bank Nifty also formed a bearish candle on the daily chart. Its immediate resistance level is now placed at 59,200 while immediate support is around 58,750.
