In another volatile session, the Indian equity markets ended lower for the second consecutive day on December 16, weighed down by continued depreciation in the rupee and uncertainty surrounding the India‑US trade deal.

The Nifty opened below 26,000, following weak global cues, and remained in the negative zone throughout the session. In the final hour, profit-booking pushed the index below the 25,850 mark.

Among the broader indices, the BSE Midcap index fell by 0.8% and the BSE Smallcap index shed 0.7%. Sectorally, only Consumer Durables and Media sectors saw gains, while all other indices closed in the red.

The Indian rupee depreciated by 1% over the last five trading sessions, crossing the 91‑mark for the first time, and hitting a record low of 91.08 per dollar during the session.

NIFTY: The index opened 75.80 points lower at 25,951.50, reached a high of 25,980.75 and closed at 25,860.10. Nifty formed a bearish candle on the daily chart. Its immediate resistance level is now placed at 25,930 while immediate support is at 25,790.

BANK NIFTY: The index opened 173.05 points lower at 59,288.75 and closed at 59,034.60. Bank Nifty also formed a bearish candle on the daily chart. Its immediate resistance level is now placed at 59,400 while immediate support is around 58,800.
